I'm riding >6000 miles per year. I know from experience that a set of cleats will not last for 5 years. Failure point is the metal spring/clip breaking after wear. Paying $175 for cleats is not going to be an option for me.
People have suggested making sure the cleat is covered to prevent the damage to the clip. However if you are putting that many miles per year which is awesome it might be time to look at the new ones (which understandably are not new).
