My 11 y/o is looking for a little freedom and wants to start riding a bike to school. He has a very decent BMX bike but dad (me) isn’t too hip on him slinging his 18 lb backpack on his back and pedaling away on one speed. In the usual n+1 mindset I thought a multi-speed something would be better for him.
NOT EASY finding a decent MTB in his size even though they are a dime a dozen around here. A little scouring on Marketplace and CL and….

26” wheels, 3x7 grip shift (works for him), provisions for mounting a rear rack, steel (YAY!), it’s only been ridden about a dozen times and since it’s XS it was a lofty $80. Best part, he LOVES this thing!! He couldn’t stop smiling while riding it. I sanded the rear pads and they seem to work well now but I envision KoolStops soon. Tires may swapped for something more appropriate for the street but he doesn’t seem to care. I’m really looking forward to rides with him, maybe starting this afternoon!
