My mistake on this was to not tighten or check tightness of the screws and other fittings in this classic bike. I was rounding a turn when the lever came off in my hand, I subconsciously grabbed the lever and pulled over to the side to find the fallen parts. Another bicyclist with the latest carbon fiber vintage came over to find out what was wrong. I walked up and down with leaf piles on the side of the road and thought of coming back after dark with a flashlight. Drivers probably thought I was a disoriented nut. I could have found the fallen parts if I really worked at it probably, but then again I could have been reported to the cops as a disoriented nut, time to get out the butterfly nets....
I can just imagine that scene! Ha !

Just a silly random thought here .
I have a magnet glued to the end of a piece of dowel in my workshop .
It works well for finding /picking up those little random steel bits that invariably escape my arthritic fingers .

maybe you could do similar at the scene of the crime so to speak
