Yes the KOROYD isn't the same as completely open vents and can be hotter. Smith isn't the only brand that uses KOROYD though. Some other brands do as well. In some cases they leave some vents unobstructed. On the other side of the coin KOROYD is supposed to absorb energy and make for a safer helmet.

Edit to note that my Smith Forefront 2 does have a couple vents that aren't obstructed by KOROYD, but fewer than most helmets and it is kind of hot.
