I understand what you mean, but my experience has been that there hasn't been too much alpha dog/anvil-size-measuring (if you know what I mean) within the blacksmithing community. Overall, very supportive. Another option I was just reminded of is local historical societies...many are happy to let someone smoke up the forge as a draw for the public.
