One word to remove the gunk, Acetone. Any don't worry about it mixing with alcohol, as both together are delicious!
And people, stay away from Stans, MucOff, etc. overpriced tapes. Order up a few rolls of Scotch 8898 tape, comes in several widths and flavors, and costs, even with shipping, a lot less than these other pretenders. There's a lot more than ten yards on each roll. I get mine from Hughes, I believe out of Sacramento CA. Order a bunch, and share with your buddies.
