I got tired of throwing away plastic tubes (former hippie) and switched to bicarbonate of soda. It also seems to work.
Some of the hippy stuff comes in metal tubes, theoretically easier to recycle than plastic ones. I've tried homemade toothpaste in the past, maybe again someday...
