The vast majority of the hotdog carts back then were owned by Greeks. They were often passed down the the children. The guy I worked for had a son who was about 12 at the time. Some ten years later, I stopped to get a pretzel at a cart. The son was working it and remembered me. The parents likely had moved back to Greece. The business was all cash with huge profit margins on many items being 100% or more. (That $0.70 hotdog probably cost less than $0.35 cents.) People (often the wives) would go back to Greece for a couple of weeks every summer and smuggle cash with them to deposit in Greek banks. When they had enough saved, the parents would retire back to the homeland.
