Had the same thing happen 3 years ago but with a very long nail. Went through the first wall of the double wall rim but thankfully stopped there. I theoretically could have fixed it and rode the 8 or so miles home but it was easier just to call my brother and have him pick me up.
The tire is a backup spare now tube went in the trash. The rim fared pretty well actually, the hole it made is much smaller than a spoke nipple hole so I stuck a piece of gaffers tape over it and called it good. Still rolling fine on my commuter.
