I'm actually considering re-painting a brand new commuter bike to look like rusty pipes, to discourage theft. Maybe something like semi-gloss grey, with splotchy matte black/orange/red lines and blobs.
When I worked in a bike shop, we actually had a guy come in asking if we sold used bikes and if we had a beat up Huffy or Murray. We said we had new bikes to fit almost any budget, and he explained that money wasn't the issue and that he wanted something that looked like crap but functioned well for his granddaughter to get around at college without her bike getting stolen like the previous bike.
