They are mountain bike pedals, or more accurately, they use mountain bike cleats. Most road cleats offer a larger platform and work with road shoes which are usuaully stiffer, at the expense of being less walkable. If you like them, I wouldn't worry about it too much.
I have tri shoes (basically road shoes) that can fit either cleat. But thanks, that answers it very well
