As for GPS, one of the off-road recovery guys I watch on video frequently rescues people who followed the GPS into the boonies in a rental car until they are stuck.
It’s even worse on the water because the little reefs and rocks between you and the next waypoint only show up at large scale. Bunch of pros in the Volvo Race failed to zoom in and missed an entire island in 2014. Fortunately, no one was badly hurt.
