Again you are confusing "Acceleration" and "Force" here.
This gets a lot easier to understand if you think in terms of applied forces rather than accelerations. Every pedal stroke requires a force. In physics/engineering we don't talk about applying accelerations do we? Accelerations are the result of
net forces acting on bodies.
