Why not just downshift all the way till the FD is sitting on the limit screw, loosen the clamp screw, and pull the cable firmly with Vise Grips while tightening the clamp screw? Generally works for me, if there's no barrel adjuster.
Doesn't seem to work and tends to break wires in my clumsy hands.
