My experience has been that the true pace is typically about 0.5w/Kg HIGHER than the advertised pace. That, plus the occasional signal drop, makes for a tough time to stay with the group.
For today’s ride, I wanted a Z2 recovery ride so picked one that was 0.5w/kg SLOWER than I wanted.
Perfection!
The other thing? Make sure you've got every single thing you need within arm's length; make sure fans are on, aimed right, and turned up to max; make sure trainer is calibrated; make sure shoes are appropriately tight; make sure bottle is full; make sure music is set up and at the correct volume; make sure your face mopping towel is convenient and WILL NOT fall to the floor.
Every time I'm in a ride and take just a second or two to fix one of those, I fall back a LOT.
