Mine were not purchased at HD. One of them, the hammer drill, was purchased from a pawn shop. $20 without battery. A steal of a deal.
But yes, I see your point. Likely down graded stuff.
I also had a 7.2 volt Makita, back in the nineties. The armature never died, but it became untenable to keep buying batteries for it.
