There is a Shimano thumb shifter mounted beneath the handlebars. The shifter was designed for this location, as the thumb-actuated lever is exactly where you'd want it while holding the grips of the bars. It has a gear indicator display easily seen by the rider.
Alternatively, a twist grip shifter is also available for use with the Alfine hub. I preferred the thumb shifter, some prefer the grip.
