As far as misgivings and PITA, I don't think they're any worse then riding a regular ol' non-protected clincher, which a lot of riders do. I tried Armadillos once hated the ride and didn't care for paying $50 apiece for them. Now I run Mr. Tuffies in all tires I can.
I've a sewup wheelset that I take out on special occasions mainly, when I think I can get out without riding in debris fields much.
Just get 3. Glue them all at once. Put 2 on wheels and put one in a bag to carry with you incase of on the road blowout. Ride home on freshly mounted tubular a little slower in the corners.
