The slotted side is slightly beveled on the edge, I'm thinking that's what holds it in place while it's being tightened. Try flipping the nut, maybe it'll tighten up.
I am intrigued by your post and I think that you are lucky that it clamped and held. I can't imagine a clamping system like that.
