Well, I was checking over a new-to-me bike and started to notice a few things out of place. It was a wall hanger and so hadn't been ridden since restoration. The seat post was 27.0 and needed to be 27.2. Luckily it hadn't been cranked down and so a 27.2 actually fit fairly easily. One disaster averted. The headset is loose and the bottom cup not completed installed (a tiny gap remains), but I'll take care of that. But then while taking a photo of the bottom bracket shell I noticed that the BB cups were reversed - the drive side on the non-drive side and vice-versa. I worried that the threads were mangled. My other Merckx has Italian threads and luckily this one does too. So easy enough to remove and flip. Always amazes me when someone doesn't get the basic stuff right.
