There was one other condition that I found the companion app would not go to the map, but that seems to have been fixed in one of the recent updates:

If I had joined a group ride or meetup in advance, when I started the companion app a "Do you want to join xxx ride now" and if I said no, the companion app would *not* go to the map. I'd have to restart the app to do so. That no longer happens - click "No" and it goes right to the map.
