Looks like I may indeed end up in a rabbit hole! Though when it comes to older cars I'm a fan of British stuff and currently have a '96 Jaguar XJ6 that keeps me busy tinkering.
My wife drives an '07 S40 and I used to drive it on our trips around California, which is how I got my first great impression of Volvos. The only older ones I can relate to belonged to the parents of friends back in high school and I never personally drove them... Here in California it's not so easy to modify post-1976 vehicles and still get them to pass SMOG, so tuning such cars always struck me as a bit of a hassle.
