I second the inReach mini. I've had mine for almost 2 years. Watch the sales this time of year. I paid much less than $400 for my unit. I got the subscription service that let's me suspend it. So I will only turn it on for a month at a time when I have a long trip planned. I use it for both hiking and biking. My DH can see where I'm at through a web page. My hiking adventures are now taking me into more remote areas of Wisconsin (Ice Age Trail) where I don't have cell service.
