Mostly to save weight. Cannondale was always trying different things when they were family owned and would do a lot of in house stuff instead of sourcing from a known supplier.
To make it work they used needle bearings and large diameter tubes and a double triple clamp, which would actually be a double double clamp.
It wasn't made for downhill or long travel bikes and in my opinion was more of a gimmick than anything else. It did work, though. I demoed one for a weekend. It's weird to look at but once riding you don't notice it at all. It seemed to work fine for what I did that weekend. No way could it ever be as burly as a Fox 36, for example.
