I'm a QC inspector. I program the CMM. I was a machinist and a CNC set up/ programmer for about 20 years before I moved over to quality.
I didn't get educated in drawing tolerances until a few years into my job. If I'd gotten it in school it might have swayed me to inspection and GD&T. It makes you feel pretty clever to create or interpret feature control frames, like you are leaving or deciphering clues to solve the puzzle faster
