From what I understand, this is one of the last Chicago-made Schwinns, and their first attempt at a "mountain" bike. It's really just their Sidewinder frame with canti bosses. It was the shifters and brakes that caught my eye in the junk heap, I'm guessing that the market was too new for low-end thumb shifters and cantis. That saddle is a hog, ain't it?
That's really cool! I had no idea that Schwinn made an actual electoforged MTB (or is it fillet brazed?). That seems like such a natural pathway for evolution for them that I always thought they missed.
The Suntour AG Tech stuff is some cool kit, too. I bought a NOS set to put on my '82-or-'83-or-so Ross that I keep at my parents' home in the USA. It was probably original.
