This is weird advice but a good way of learning how to emergency stop is to just disconnect your back brake. It’s really only useful for minor speed adjustments in a group, and to avoid excessive wear/heat on the front, but that’s just my opinion. Of course it’s always nice to have a backup brake in case something horrible happens. My shoe is messed up because I had to lock the back wheel up with my foot after a front brake failure and it ripped a big chunk of rubber out.
