Kept them from getting mixed up with team mate’s wheels when traveling to races and gave you a better chance of getting your wheels back if you were lucky enough to go to a race that had a wheel van. And in the US anybody who was selected to go to an international event always wrote USA after their name. Even after the event, those letters were a long lasting bit of subtle intimidation on the starting line.
