Dentists generally make more $$$ than generalist physicians because they can charge and collect what the service is worth, rather than be in bed with the 3rd party payor system where we can only collect what the insurance agrees to pay us.
When I was working and had insurance that he did accept, usually only about half of his charges were covered. The insurance has a schedule of fees which they pay and the dentist charges whatever he wants and the patient makes up the difference. That has been my experience.
