Quadlock would be the way to go. Cheap stuff to hold a potentially expensive phone is just dumb and sounds like a really poor idea. If you are scraping the bottom of the barrel I would recommend using clear tape and wrapping some around it. No need for a phone case or anything and the tape will probably fail but you at least expect that.
