IIRC Mavic went to a single use axle cone (actually a sleeve that the bearing ID fit on) in the mid 1990s. When a readjustment or a bearing replacement is done this "cone/sleeve" needs to be replaced. The cone/sleeve is deformed (like a rivet) on it's installation. Hence the single use. I always felt this was a stupid design, a cost savings Mavic would say. I'll speculate that some riders were over tightening the pin holed preload ring, as found on the older hub designs, so Mavic came up with a design that eliminated hone adjustment. Andy
