Shorter trips and commuting around town possibly carrying cargo will be better served by a cruiser geometry bike. Hybrids do well for those that have never given cruisers a chance, but that doesn't make hybrids a great bike choice.
I've ridden both, and actually used both as commuters. I found the hybrid infinitely superior in terms of speed, rideability and convenience.
