It's the spacing, although I could see why there might be a concern for dropout stress on a direct drive. When set up for 130mm spacing the clearance between the inside of the non-drive dropout and the frame is 5mm. Revising spacing from the drive side would require a replacement for the Cassette as well as the "axle". You would end up with something like the LeMond Revolution kit mentioned above (looked that up & it was a very cool idea).
