1X is very nice on a mt. bike when you ride trails with a lot of closely spaced up and downs, where you are shifting a lot. You don't spend time thinking about the need to shift the front and the rear into something useful.
I actually preferred my 2x for trails like that, because I could do relatively big jumps with a single front change up/down vs multiple shifts on my 1x. For everything else then 1x just seems easier.
I wouldn't bother changing a bike from one to the other though.
