Modern medicine is amazing - a coworker could barely walk. She got so bad she was using a lab cart like a walker, and could still barely move around. Got both knees replaced, and within a couple months was back to full mobility. Yeah, I know - knees not hips. But ideally, it'll be much the same for your Dad!
Hip replacement recovery is usually much faster, less painful, and better than knee replacement.
