The underlying fact to realize is that Mumford Cove is closed to outsiders. The gate is a physical manifestation at their private entrance to the trail, but the roads are posted private as well. You and I don't have to like that, but we do have to heed it.
There's only one road into and out of Groton Long Point (and by extension Mumford Cove) so anything you do there will be a loop crossing the bridge by Esker beach twice.
