Im using Suntour Command shifters, they are index and friction compatible, they work perfectly in the index mode with the suntour xc rear derailleur.
+1 above on the Suntour goodness, esp. jeally of the Command shifters. I suppose they're one of my "grail components", something I would love to have just to put on a bike and try.

Hard to tell from the angle, but am I correct that you're using both eyelets on either side of the fork to mount the low rider? I'm fitting one to the Nishiki touring bike I just bought, and never thought of that option.
