I use serial numbers first and then model/years/colors (assuming original paint which on older Treks is pretty much the norm) to validate models and years. Relative to your 400, the model/years/colors sheet shows the 85 to be "blue with white or yellow decals, also scarlet" while the 470 would be black with red decals. Is one of those combinations your bike's colors and is the paint original? Below is the model/years/colors sheet from wayback machine...... have a look. Below that is the serial number sheet for 1985. Often a serial number for the early part of one year can actually be in the latter part of the prior year's list as production for an upcoming year often started before a current model year had actually ended. That would be an explanation if your serial number actually predates the 1985 list.

Already found those pages, thanks. Info there verified by Ser No that the frame I have acquired is a 1985 470, not a 400. Based on the serial number it was also likely manufactured in Spring of 1985 and thus almost certainly an 85 model. Paint and decals also match the catalog photo.

Catalog containing the 1985 660S and 470 can be found at

It's the first bike in the touring section of that catalog scan. The 660S is the second bike pictured on the same page. Specifications for each are on the next page following the photos.

According to the catalog link you posted on the restoration.bike site, the 470 is listed as a Trek touring model and was made in only 4 years: 1985, 1996, 1997, and 1998. I think the folks at restoration.bike may have missed scanning a page or two in the touring section of the1985 catalog (or perhaps the catalog they scanned was missing a page). Fortunately, the Retrobike site had a scan of the 1985 Trek catalog containing those pages.
