I've seen pairs of blackbirds harassing crows who stray too close to their nest in the wrong season. Last month I saw a pair of crows similarly harassing a hawk. In both cases, the smaller birds are far more maneuverable. It's like fighter planes going after a bomber, but with the bomber not having turret guns.
The jays were dive bombing the cats at my old house. One day I saw my cat eating one of them, a big one, too.
