On new bikes, around here $1000 gets entry level. In fact, it is rare to see a single new road bike at a shop for $1000. And thats US $$. And to be fair to the new stuff, even the entry level parts work pretty well. Uninspiring to those of us into vintage bikes, but functionally proficient.
Agree wholeheartedly with Bill that you should be able to find a nice used bike (even one with more modern brifters) for considerably less than $1000 CAD. If you post where you are located, BF members can do a quick search of online available bikes in your area and give some recommendations.
