That sounds like it's designed to fail. Is there room to slip a cable housing liner over that little bit of cable? In C&V they use those liners where the cable passes under the bb shell. Maybe a drop of solder to keep it from fraying. Or a drop of super glue.
They break where they flex on the radius of the part that rotates inside the shifter. You wouldn't want to solder or try to stiffen the wire there. It's a tight fit, I doubt you could get any kind of liner in there.
Breaking there is a normal effect of the design. It seems that datlas is experiencing a higher than normal failure rate.
