think it’s mostly down to development of frames with lower top tubes and shorter head tubes.
To make these work with deeper bars requires an upturned stem and spacers for most.
shallower and longer works better with modern frames and will be more aero with less frontal area.
I would hazard a guess that they are stiffer as well.
