Re. tire width, I'm drinking the kool-aid on the wider tire idea. I've only ridden 3 brevets but 2 of them were on 42s and a few weeks ago I rode 44s. They're super cushy and comfortable. I did just pick up a Soma San Marcos that only has clearance for 35s in the back but I still might try to squeeze in a 38 up front. The San Marcos is currently running 28s and the ride quality isn't harsh but it's not as plush as the the bike with 44s.
