I went back to college about '92 or '93 because I had been programming for a year or two for fun and enjoyed it. Because of my science and math background, my advisor steered me away from IT and talked me into CS which is mainly algorithms and pseudo-code and also writing stuff for math problems, nothing practical. By my senior year, I was burned out and sick of writing stuff to solve theoretical problems and never seeing any real results from your work that said, "Wow! That's cool." Despite having a perfect GPA, I decided to drop out and apply myself to my real career that had been suffering somewhat from the all of the homework. It was a good decision on my part.
