The Io has been used on the road. When Ivan Basso was one of the top GT contenders, he, and a few others used custom Io's with a brake track for use in (I think) the Giro prologue. It was an extremely short, fast stage, with a tailwind the whole way. It may have been made as a "just in case" wheel for the day for the big teams in the case of ideal wind conditions.
You can clearly see the brake track in the second picture. That was Basso's bike.
