His father was a civil engineer who first send him to university to study civil engineering, but he soon switched to a school for architecture and decorative arts within which he switched from the first to the latter.There's a bit of a translation issue here, but it's not alien to his background, he just took the creative direction. I don't think that should be very surprising because much of his work has something mathematical to it. I like the picture, it's just not that farfetched.
