When I first took up running in 1973 I slowly made the connection between fitness and what I put into my body. I would go on a run and would be picked up by my friends at times and light up smoke and do a few hits on a joint. But as I became more serious about fitness I eschewed tobacco and weed and more importantly cocaine that was appearing everywhere. In 1985 I was running 10k's in 30 minutes. I could win races and this was a tremendous boost to my fragile ego that was suffering from a wife wife who cheated on me. I was between a rock and a hard place as I had to decide if I was going to leave two children to the indigence of a fractured family. It was like standing in the window of a highrise and choosing to jump or burn. Maybe I deserved what I got, maybe not. I was 26.
Thanks to Frank Shorter 1972 I took the road less traveled and it made a huge difference. I could have turned to drugs to cope but I went a different way. Now I am on my way to eighty and I am in great shape. In 1983 thanks to stress fractures I began going to the bike. Another momentous decision I do not regret.
