Yes, people cheer for the athletes from their countries. Yes, many of them cheer against athletes from the top competitor nations (was Russia, now China?). Is that not human nature?

What's going on now pales in comparison to what goes on in the fall in the southeastern US (TN, GA, FL, AL, et.al).
