If you decide to see a doctor I'd perhaps go straight to the dermatologist, because I've had issues with general practitioners before simply because they're not all experts in this field. Practitioners think it's one thing, then the specialist says it's totally something different, in which case they're right. Happened to me many times with skin, feet, gastro and joint/muscle issues.
