On my last visit to the SD area, I saw it a lot -- people at the gym, their spotlessly-clean SUVs parked in front and a shiny $10,000 never-used bike on the roof rack. The owners were probably inside riding the exercise bikes.
That being said, I never understood why someone would drive to the gym to sit on an exercise bike or walk/run on a treadmill for an hour. If they'd only ride/walk/run to the gym and back home they wouldn't need the gym membership.
